The annual Basu Prize for Civil Engineering
The Basu Prize for Civil Engineering is awarded to MSc student(s) who submit the best proposal for undertaking their dissertation project overseas.
Congratulations to Melina Christina and Maud Macary of Transport Section and 2013 winners of the Basu Prize.
Melina and Maud's MSc projects are related to Professor Nick Tyler’s work with the local government of Lima & Callao in providing a Transport NAMA (Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action). This NAMA aims to reform the transport system in this city in order to reduce carbon emission while supporting economic growth and improve the quality of life.
Maud Macary’s subject is a comparison analysis between the formal (The Metropolitano) and informal (private buses) transport. In previous works, 5 key characteristics have been defined to achieve a civilised city: courtesy city, active city, city as public space, liveable city, and evolving city. A multi-criteria analysis will be done regarding these criteria in order to improve both systems.
Melina Christina’s subject is the proposals of pedestrian-oriented design for a station of The Metropolitano. It would be based on the understanding of the aspirations of the users thanks to a survey carried out there.
Because of the Basu award both students will have the opportunity to go to Lima to have access to data and carry out site-visits.
