Professor Stephen Smith is the invited expert on the European TAIEX Expert Mission to Iceland on the Use of Organic Waste for Land Improvement

Professor Stephen Smith is the invited expert on the European TAIEX Expert Mission to Iceland on the Use of Organic Waste for Land Improvement, and he reviewed the production, treatment and management of biodegradable wastes in the south-west region of the country during a visit to Iceland from 22 – 26 April 2013. The Mission was arranged by the Technical Assistance and Information Exchange (TAIEX) instrument of the Directorate-General Enlargement of the European Commission in co-operation with the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) of Iceland. The aim of the Mission was to evaluate how existing methods of disposal of organic waste materials in Iceland can be improved to fulfil EU requirements and to  assess the opportunities for using organic wastes in Iceland for land improvement and restoration of degraded areas. Professor Smith visited various waste treatment facilities and land restoration sites where biodegradable wastes are being used and he presented an evaluation of his observations in the context of European environmental management practices and controls on organic wastes at a meeting of utility and commercial operators, university research staff, SCS personnel and government regulators
