CWC Workshop - NWP/ Hydrological model coupling - 7th Feb 2014
Workshop on Numerical Weather Prediction/ Hydrological Model Coupling
On Friday 7th Feb 2014 a workshop on Numerical Weather Prediction/ Hydrological Model Coupling was held at the Grantham Institute for Climate Change (Imperial College London). The workshop was funded by the NERC Changing Water Cycle (CWC) programme and a total of 30 participants from numerous UK universities attended. The agenda included presentations from eminent experts in downscaling, Dr Kwok (Sun) Chun (University of Saskatchewan) and Dr Fredrik Wetterhall (European Centre of Medium-Range Weather Forecasts), as well as the key note talk given by Professor Tim Benton (University of Leeds) who described the general challenges faced in the agriculture-land use-water nexus on a global level over the coming decades. The roundtable discussions that followed in the afternoon emphasised the importance of quantifying the uncertainty in downscaling, as well as including the representation of anthropogenic influence (such as irrigation) in the land surface model to accurately asses the potential coupling of the land surface and atmosphere. The workshop outcomes will be presented at the CWC Annual Meeting that will be held from 25-26 June 2014 in Oxford.
