TSM-CDT student Andrea Greco (Cohort 4) wins annual Thomas Young Centre Christmas Card Design Competition

Congratulations to TSM-CDT student, Andrea Greco (Cohort 4), for winningthe annual Thomas Young Centre Christmas Card Design Competition.

The Thomas Young Centre (TYC) is the London Centre for Theory andSimulation of Materials and consists of over 80 research groups atImperial College, UCL, King's College and QMUL. Each year members of theTYC are asked to send in their most beautiful research images, one ofwhich is selected as the design for the TYC Christmas Card.

We are delighted to report that Andrea Greco's striking design has beenchosen as this year's winner. The image is made up of a repeated snowflake pattern of a silicon nanoparticle under hydrostatic pressure. The electronic isosurface (shown in green in the image) defines a"quantum volume" for the nanoparticle. This in turn enables thedetermination of structural phase transformations that occur whenpressure is applied.

The research behind the image was performed in collaboration with Niccolo Corsini (TSM-CDT Cohort 2) as part of a project on pressureinduced structural transformations in nanomaterials, supervised by ProfPeter Haynes and Dr Nicholas Hine (Imperial College) and Carla Molteni(King's College London).
