Tanaka Business School alumnus appointed President of hospital systems group, Business Wire, 7 December 2005

Richard Atkin, a healthcare information technology veteran and former chief executive officer of two healthcare IT companies, has been named President of one of Misys Healthcare Systems' key businesses.

Atkin will lead Misys Healthcare Systems' Hospital Systems group, which supports over a thousand hospitals and hundreds of laboratories worldwide with enterprise-wide clinical solutions, electronic patient records solutions, and departmental information systems.

"Richard is an experienced leader with intimate knowledge of the healthcare industry. We're excited to have him complement our team," said Tom Skelton, chief executive officer of Misys Healthcare Systems. "Richard's predecessor, Andrew Lawson, did an exceptional job of growing the business from a series of departmental solutions for hospitals to a true enterprise-wide system that helps clinicians, IT professionals and C-level management run their businesses and provide excellent patient care. With Richard's background of propelling global healthcare companies forward, we're confident he will build upon our successes, continue growing the business, and provide quality customer support for our clients."

Atkin comes to Misys Healthcare Systems following seven years of CEO experience for two, multi-million-dollar global medical technology companies. He served as President and CEO of Massachusetts-based Datex-Ohmeda Inc., a division of Helsinki-based Instrumentarium that focused on anesthesia, life support and monitoring technology. Datek-Ohmeda had global sales of $800 million. When Instrumentarium acquired Washington-based Spacelabs Medical in 2002, he was named CEO of that $200 million clinical patient record company concurrent with his CEO/President Datex-Ohmeda Inc. responsibilities. Atkin left both roles last year when Instrumentarium was acquired, and has spent the past year consulting.

Atkin has his bachelor of science degree in physics and material sciences from the University of Wales, and a master's of business administration from the University of London's Imperial College Business School.

In his role as President of Misys Healthcare Systems' Hospital Systems group, Atkin will oversee and lead all operations of the business, including product development, sales, and service and support. He officially began the new role this week and works in Misys Healthcare Systems' Raleigh, N.C. corporate headquarters.

Misys Healthcare Systems announced this summer that it was searching for a new President of this business when Andrew Lawson decided he wanted to shift roles in the organization. Lawson remains with Misys Healthcare Systems and is currently engaged with the company's strategic business development group.
