Mathieu Komorowski, MRes and PhD student with Dr Aldo Faisal was awarded the £500 prize for applying reinforcement learning algorithms to improve intensive care survival.
With the ubiquity of data collected in intensive care units the team developed data science methods to mine medical decision making and extra policies that boost patient survival. The winning approach used anartificial intelligence method, called reinforcement learning, to automatically and objectively extract these patterns from databases with over 100,000 patient records.
