Don't miss the FoNS-MAD Final!

The shortlisted FoNS-MAD teams have now completed their summer lab placements, during which time they developed their projects to proof-of-concept stage, and have now submitted their final reports.

The teams will present their ideas to our VIP panel of judges at an event open to staff, students and guests, on Wednesday 26 October 2016 from 17.00, where this year’s winning team will be announced.  Anyone wishing to attend the final event, should email fonsmad@imperial.ac.uk.

The judges for this year’s competition are Professor Dame Julia Higgins, Professor of Polymer Science and Senior Research Investigator in the Department of Chemical Engineering; Professor Sir John Pendry from the Department of Physics; Professor Lord Robert Winston, Professor of Science and Society and Emeritus Professor of Fertility Studies; and Dr Ruth Allan, of Deloitte.

Summary of idea: Simple and rapid test of peroxide concentration in frying oil to determine if it is suitable and safe for consumption and re-use

Summary of idea: Prevention of mosquito penetration by minimising the frictional adhesion forces between mosquito and a host surface, using epicuticular wax crystals

In other FoNS-MAD news, team FightBac, who took part in the earlier stages of FoNS-MAD, have been shortlisted for an International Student Innovation Award. Prof Ramon Vilar and Rebecca Middleton of the FoNS-MAD Organising Committee have been invited to support the team at the showcase event for this award in November.

FightBac are Nishta Parekh and Jiarui Xu from Life Sciences; Harrison Zhu from Mathematics; Sunghun Jung of Maths and Computing; and Jiarui (Henry) Xu of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
