Mr Donald C. Miller (Mechanical Engineering 1945, DIC 1948)
Provided by Paul Miller
Following Donald’s degree, national service in the Navy caused serious illness, major surgery and long convalescence. Then for health reasons he undertook farm management in Kenya. Donald’s return to UK in the late 1950s led to work for Bristol Siddeley Engines, then Vickers at Barrow, and in 1969 back to Bristol into what had become a division of Rolls-Royce Aero Engines. He joined the team working on the aerodynamic design of compressors for the engines in the Concorde and Harrier aircraft and became very involved in the development of high pressure compressors for over 20 years. This work formed the basis of technology incorporated in modern aero engines, particularly the V2500 and BR700 series. He became a widely respected figure for his knowledge of a complex subject. Retirement came in 1991 but he continued with consultancy work and served a term on Bristol City Council. He was married to Eileen (died 1991) and Sheila (died 2004). Donald was diagnosed with terminal cancer; his aim was to reach 80 years. This he did and remained a gentleman to the end. He is survived by four children and six grandchildren.Article text (excluding photos or graphics) © Imperial College London.
