Dr Frederic Cegla from the Non-Destructive Evaluation group appeared on the BBC Radio 4 programme Today on Thursday morning.

The brief interview focused on Dr Cegla’s entrepreneurial success, which was recognised by Imperial with a President’s Award and Medal for Excellence in Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Dr Cegla explained that non-destructive evaluation involves “testing whether a machine is fit for service and safe to use”, and talked about how his research developed into a spin-out company by finding solutions to real industry problems.

Permasense, a start-up based on the research of Dr Cegla, Dr Jon Allin and Professor Peter Cawley in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial, was sold to Emerson in 2016 for over £30 million.

Inspecting for corrosion in hazardous environments such as oil refineries usually involves stopping operation, but the technology created by Imperial engineers allows for continuous monitoring of components.

You can listen to the full interview on BBC iPlayer (starting around 2 hours 50 minutes into the recording).
