Conference Talks

Paulina Quintanilla gave a talk at the 18th International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) symposium in Mining, Mineral and Metal Processing (MMM), which took place in Stellenbosch, South Africa, on 28 August - 30 August 2019. Her talk was entitled “Dynamic physics-based flotation models for effective predictive control: state-of-the-art and challenges”, with Stephen Neethling and Pablo Brito-Parada as co-authors.
Paulina Q at IFAC_MMMHuerta Perez Felipe, Catalina Pino Muñoz and Jorge Ávalos attended the 12th International Conference on Computational Heat, Mass and Momentum Transfer (ICCHMT) 2019 on 3 - 6 September at Rome, Italy. They gave oral presentations on the topics below:

Awards

Rebecca Bell has been awarded the British Geophysical Association (BGA) Bullerwell Lecturer Prize for 2020. As the prize winner, she will give the keynote Bullerwell Lecture at EGU 2020. The prize is given to “An outstanding early career British Geophysicist” and is one of the principal events in the BGA calendar, which has been presented every year since 1981.

Impact and Media

Dick Selley's research on the impact of climate change on British viticulture was cited in the Financial Times and Forbes magazine.

Obituary

Peter R. Simpson, a friend of the department, has passed away at the age of 82. In the early 2000s, Peter contributed to both the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of exploration and environmental geochemistry in the Department, the course generated very favourable reviews from students.
