Research Excellence Framework 2021

The Department of Computing at Imperial College London has been rated as the best department in the subject Computer Science and Informatics in the recent Research Excellence Framework 2021. Like the other 89 departments that were evaluated in this subject in the UK, the Department of Computing submitted research papers, case studies on the impact of its research, and a description of the environment in which this research is supported and conducted.

For the submissions of the Department of Computing, all case studies and its environment were rated to be world-leading; 88.4% of the research papers were rated to be world-leading and 11.6% of the research papers were judged to be internationally excellent. No other institution came close to this overall quality profile of excellence in the subject Computer Science and Informatics.

“The talent, dedication, arduous work, and collegiality of our students and staff form the foundation on which our research can thrive like this. As a department we are eager to develop a more diverse staff and student body and research portfolio that reflects the age of digitization and responsible innovation. Being top rated for research, we look forward to co-shaping the Imperial-X strategic initiative and to becoming a more prominent part of the College’s mission.” says Michael Huth, Head of the Department of Computing.
