From understanding our oceans to addressing energy demands with nuclear, here is some quick-read news from across Imperial.

Understanding oceans  

Birdseye view of a shorelineA new $9.5m project aims to investigate how the ocean is warming, absorbing carbon, losing oxygen and becoming more acidic as a result of climate change. Dr Heather Graven, from the Department of Physics at Imperial is Co-Investigator on the international project, which is led by researchers from UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego, USA. 

The project is funded by the nonprofit Schmidt Sciences for the next five years, joining the Ocean Biogeochemistry Virtual Institute (OBVI). The team will use new approaches that make use of machine learning, high resolution modelling and a wide range of data from the ocean and the atmosphere. The large scale of the project also means that links can be made between different activities that have not been joined up before, creating a more comprehensive picture of global ocean change than previously possible. 

Dr Graven will contribute to data synthesis and modelling to determine past and future changes to the ocean environment.

Energy Futures Lab Lecture

It features Michael Liebreich, co-managing partner of EcoPragma Capital and CEO of Liebreich Associates. Mr Liebreich will delve into global energy transition trends and the role of hydrogen.

The lecture will be followed by a panel discussion with Professor Tim Green and Greg Jackson. Join them for an insightful evening and a drinks reception.

Nuclear energy for rising energy demands

To answer this, the Energy Futures Lab is launching its latest white paper called "The Future of Nuclear Power in the UK: Challenges and Opportunities" on 25 June 2024.
