At the ACS conference, Nigel presented two papers in the Environmental Chemistry theme on Ferrates: Synthesis, Properties and Applications in Water and Wastewater Treatment. The papers were entitled, “Evaluating the Coagulation Performance of Ferrate – A Preliminary Study” (Khoi Tran T, Graham N and Jiang J) and “Degradation of Di-butyl Phthalate in Aqueous Solution by a Combined Ferrate and Photocatalytic Oxidation Process” (Li X Z, Yuan B L and Graham N).The latter paper is based on joint work being undertaken at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. At the University of New Hampshire, Nigel gave a research seminar to the Environmental Research Group and visited the Water Treatment Technology Assistance Center, where he has a collaborative research project with Professor Robin Collins.

Dr Michael TempletonWelcome to Dr. Michael Templeton who has joined the section as a Lecturer in Environmental Engineering.

Michael obtained his undergraduate and doctoral degrees at the University of Toronto (Canada), where he specialized in drinking water quality and treatment. His doctoral thesis focused on the ultraviolet disinfection of waterborne viruses and the impact of suspended particles on this process. He has been published in journals including Water Research, the Journal of Applied Microbiology, and the Journal of Environmental Engineering and Science.

He has also conducted engineering consulting work and was briefly a post-doctoral research associate in Toronto before accepting the Lecturer post. Michael will be assisting with teaching in the MEng. and MSc programs this coming term and plans to start research soon into newly identified disinfection by-products and emerging pathogens in drinking water, and treatment methods for addressing these issues.

We welcome Michael and his wife Jessica to the UK and hope they have a long fruitful stay with us at Imperial College.

Welcome to  Dr Kung Yuh Chiang from the Department of Environmental Engineering and Science, Feng-Chia University, Taiwan.   Dr Yuh is a Post Doc. working under the supervision of Dr Chris Cheeseman.
