Dr Michael Templeton Presents Research in Singapore and Malayisa
On 26 November in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, and on 28 November in Singapore Dr Michael Templeton presented a talk entitled "Water Quality and Public Health: Civil Engineering Challenges for the 21st Century" as part of the Imperial College Centenary Symposia in Singapore and Malaysia.
New Baby for PhD Student: Tanya Jones
Congratulations to Tanya Jones, who had a baby boy, Anton, at 6.50 am on Saturday 24th November. Tanya is doing a PhD on climate change effects on water resources in SE England.
PhD Success for Olympia Mitaftsi
Congratulations to Olympia Mitaftsi who successfully defended her PhD thesis on 26 November. Professor Chris Coggins was the external examiner and the title of Olympia's thesis was Quantifying Household Waste Diversion from Landfill Disposal by Home Composting and Kerbside Collection. The project was funded by The Norlands Foundation and was in collaboration with Runnymede Borough Council; Dr Stephen Smith was the Principal Investigator.
New Imperial College spin-out company formed based on EWRE research
Imperial Innovation have recently formed a new spin out company, NovaCem Ltd, to commercialise technology developed by Nikolaos Vlasopoulos and Chris Cheeseman. The company is developing a range cementitious binders that are associated with low carbon emissions and offer the unique potential to develop a range of sustainable construction products.
Prof Wheater Gives Flood Advice to the House of Commons Committee
Prof Howard Wheater was interviewed yesterday (8th November) by the House of Commons Committee on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, as part of their inquiry into UK floods. The section’s research into the links between agriculture and flooding has been reported in recent Radio 4 interviews for ‘Costing the Earth’ and ‘Farming Today’.
EWRE Welcomes New Research Associate: Dr Zhuo Chen
The EWRE Section would like to wish a warm welcome to Chen, (Dr Zhuo Chen), who started as a Research Associate on 19 September. Chen will be working on Dr Michael Templeton’s EPSRC-funded project entitled: "Formation and Occurrence of N-Nitrosodimethylamine and Other N-Nitrosamines in UK Drinking Water" for the next 2 years. Chen has a PhD from the University of Iowa and worked as a research associate at the University of Arizona before coming Imperial.
PhD Success for Vanessa Adell
Vanessa Adell successfully completed her PhD viva examination on Wednesday October 31st 2007. Her research was on the 'Production of lightweight aggregate from problematic waste ashes using the Lytag process'. This was funded by an EPSRC Industrial Case Award through the KTN-Resource Efficiency Network (formerly the Mini-waste Faraday Partnership) in collaboration with Lytag Ltd. The research was supervised by Dr Chris Cheeseman (EWRE) and Dr Aldo Boccaccini from the Materials Department at Imperial.
EWRE Welcomes New Member of Staff: Dr Simon Mathias
EWRE is happy to report that Dr Simon Mathias has been given funding for a Lectureship, sponsored by Worley Parsons in Hydrology and Environmental Engineering.
