Christian Hampel

An academic from Imperial Business School has been named as one of the leading business school professors under the age of 40.

Christian Hampel, Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation, has been recognised for the quality of his research and teaching by Poets&Quants, a US title that focusses on the latest developments within business education around the world.

Poets&Quants publishes an annual list of the leading young MBA professors worldwide. The list is based entirely on the strength of nominations from current and former students and colleagues, and nominations must include concrete examples of teaching and research.

Dr Hampel’s research focuses on the challenges facing startups as they seek to establish themselves whilst still lacking the essential elements they need to thrive, such as employees, investors and positive publicity. His research looks at how startups can overcome these challenges. His work has a strong focus on mission-driven organisations that are seeking to create social impact.

Recently, Dr Hampel has been researching how startups can combat “antagonistic excitement” which is a type of excitement that employees get from breaking rules while they pursue growth.

"I hope being on the 40 under 40 list will draw positive attention to the important work we are doing at Imperial in entrepreneurship that focuses on social impact.” Dr Christian Hampel Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation

His research has received ESRC funding and been published in leading journals, including the Academy of Management Journal and Academy of Management Review. He is also an Associate Research Fellow of the Cambridge Centre for Social Innovation.

In 2023, he became the youngest recipient of the Excellence Award for Innovation in Teaching at Imperial Business School for his Leading Social Innovation module which he teaches to MBA students. The course, which he designed, enables students to become more impactful social innovators.

Dr Hampel said: “I’m honoured to receive this recognition for my work by Poets&Quants and would like to thank all my amazing students, colleagues and alumni who nominated me. I hope being on the 40 under 40 list will draw positive attention to the important work we are doing at Imperial in entrepreneurship that focuses on social impact.”

Professor Peter Todd, Dean of Imperial Business School said: “Congratulations Christian for this fantastic achievement. Being named by Poets&Quants as one of the world’s top 40 under 40 business professors is wonderful recognition of Christian’s research and the high quality of his teaching. He is clearly passionate about his subject and is a wonderful inspiration to his students.”

Dr Hampel is the seventh academic from Imperial Business School to be featured in the top 40 under 40 list, following the success of Dr Anne ter Wal, Professor Andreas Eisingerich, Dr Laura Noval, Dr Harveen Chugh, Dr Ileana Stigliani and Dr Paolo Taticchi.

In an interview with Poets&Quants, Dr Hampel told the publication his favourite hobbies are swimming, yoga and reading. He also said one of his research papers was inspired by a scene from the TV show, “Friends.”
