Professor Barbara Casadei, Head of the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) at Imperial, has been named as JAMA Cardiology's new editor in chief.

Professor Barbara Casadei, Head of the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) and British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Imperial College London, has been announced as the next Editor in Chief of JAMA Cardiology. She will take up the role in early 2026, succeeding Professor Robert Bonow, the founding Editor in Chief.

An internationally recognised leader in cardiovascular research, Professor Casadei has dedicated her career to advancing understanding and treatment of common cardiovascular conditions such as heart failure and atrial fibrillation. She leads a translational “bench to bedside” research programme and is principal investigator of a large-scale cardiac monitoring study involving over 35,000 participants in the UK Biobank imaging cohort. This study is exploring the impact of clinically silent arrhythmias on AI-derived imaging parameters, cognitive decline, and the risk of cardioembolic stroke.

Alongside her research, Professor Casadei founded and co-chaired EuroHeart, an initiative supported by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) aimed at assessing and improving cardiovascular care in Europe. She is also a past President of the ESC (2018–2020) and serves on the boards of several international organisations, including the Leducq Foundation (US), Novo Nordisk Foundation (Denmark), Max Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicine (Berlin), and CADENCE (Singapore). Her contributions to the field have been recognised with honours such as the Mackenzie Medal from the British Cardiovascular Society and the Gold Medal from the ESC.

Professor Casadei gained her medical degree at the University of Pavia in Italy and her doctorate at the University of Oxford, where she remains a Visiting Professor.
