The winner of this year’s poster competition, which was held to coincide with the Natural Sciences Research Showcase 2025, has been announced.

The winner of this year’s poster competition, which was held to coincide with the Natural Sciences Research Showcase 2025, has been announced.

Efthymios Costa, from the Department of Mathematics, won both First Place and the People’s Choice Award, for his poster which looked at 'From Entropy to Insight: Discovering Groups in Mixed-Type Data’.

On the announcement of his win, Efthymios Costa said: “I'm delighted and grateful to have my work recognised among so many inspiring projects! This award is a credit to my supervisors and colleagues and motivates me to keep building flexible tools for real-world data analysis.”

The Faculty of Natural Sciences Poster Competition was held as part of the Natural Sciences Research Showcase 2025, which was unfortunately cancelled due to the Transport for London tube strikes. The poster competition was able to go ahead, in an online capacity.

Efthymios said his poster “describes how concepts from information theory can be used to discover meaningful patterns and structure in data sets that combine numerical and categorical variables. Applied to clinical records from prostate cancer patients, the proposed approach reveals three groups with distinct clinical profiles that can inform tailored treatment decisions."

The prize for First Place was £200 and the prize for winning the People’s Choice Award was £100.

Alina Yang, from the Department of Physics, was awarded Runner-Up, winning a prize of £150, for their poster which showed how ‘Simulated Detection of Methane Released from Permafrost Thaw with Atmospheric Measurements’.

As part of the judging process, 12 posters were evaluated based on: 1) Scientific quality, and 2) Effectiveness of poster submitted (including clarity of research objectives, motivations, outcomes, and future directions, all at a standard expected at doctoral level). In addition to the judges’ selections, the wider College community was invited to vote for their favourite poster as part of the People’s Choice Award.

The Organising Committee would like to extend their sincere thanks to the judging panel composed by the Directors of Postgraduate Research from all FoNS Departments and to all Imperial members for their contributions to this year’s poster competition.
