New Associate Professor and Senior Teaching Fellow join Department of Materials
The Department of Materials recently welcomed two new key appointments, strengthening both our research and teaching community.
Dr Sean Collins
Dr Sean Collins joins as Associate Professor in Data-Driven Characterisation of Materials. His research focuses on advanced electron microscopy and imaging techniques to study the structure and properties of materials at the micro- and nanoscale. His work includes developing two-dimensional and three-dimensional approaches to investigate light-matter interactions in nanoparticles, as well as exploring heterogeneous catalysis and metal-organic framework materials.
Dr Collins was previously Associate Professor at the Bragg Centre for Materials Research, University of Leeds. Sean studied Chemistry at the University of Michigan before completing a PhD in Materials at the University of Cambridge, followed by postdoctoral and fellowship positions.
Dr Gloria Young
Dr Gloria Young joins as Senior Teaching Fellow. Her research investigates how green spaces can filter air pollution in urban environments, focusing on the role of leaves as natural ‘biomonitors’ for particulate matter. Using imaging and elemental mapping techniques, she studies how different types of pollution attach to plant surfaces and explores their potential to protect human health.
Dr Young was previously a Research Associate in the Department of Materials, supervised by Professor Julian Jones. She studied Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge and completed a PhD and postdoctoral research at Imperial in biomaterials and electron imaging. She will take on the role of Department Undergraduate Senior Tutor, following a handover period from Dr Priya Saravanapavan and Professor David Dye.
They both bring valuable expertise and vision in research and teaching, and the Department of Materials look forward to their contributions and collaborations across Imperial.
