Dr Douglas H Bell (PhD 1960)

In 1956, after graduating from the University of Toronto in Metallurgical Engineering, Doug started his PhD studies at Imperial College, Royal School of Mines. On completion in 1960, he returned to Canada. In 1961, he joined the Aluminum Company of Canada's research laboratories in Arvida, Quebec where he worked for four years, and met and married his future wife, Joan Atkinson-Bell.
In 1965, Doug and his family returned to Toronto where he worked for several consulting firms and the Ontario Provincial Government. In 1985, he joined the Federal Government in Ottawa, where he worked until his early retirement in 1995. For the next twelve years, Doug enjoyed the outdoor life in Mont Tremblant, Quebec in the retirement home that Joan and he had built.
In June 2007, he was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer - CNS Lymphoma - and after a valiant battle, died peacefully on September 26th in Ottawa. He was 75 years old. His love of life and passion for many things will be remembered with fondness by all who knew him. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Joan, of 44 years, his three children, Jonathan, Tony and Lisa, and his cherished five grandchildren.
