Mr Wright Waddington (1942)

Provided by Helen Waddington

Wright was born in 1921. He was the youngest of four children and born into a working class mill worker’s family. He excelled at school and gained a County Major Scholarship in order to study at Imperial College.

Having gained a degree in Chemistry in 1942, Wright went to work for Unilever at Port Sunlight. Initially he was engaged in research relating to supplying food to the troops on the front line. He stayed with Unilever until 1954 when he moved back to his native county of Yorkshire and took up a post of Research Chemist with the Coal Tar Research Authority. It was here he met his wife Joan, marrying her three days after his 40th birthday.

A short time after the births of his two daughters, he moved to the West Midlands to head up a team at Synthite Limited. He remained with this Formaldehyde manufacturer until he retired in 1986.

In his spare time, Wright was an enthusiastic artist, producing many works which adorned the family home.

Wright passed away in January 2008 at the age of 86. He is missed by his daughters, Rachel and Helen and his two Grandchildren, Kirsten and Alex.
