Media Mention for Imperial Researchers
The BBC feature âSperm Clue to Disease Immunityâ describes studies by Dr Stuart Haslam and Professor Anne Dell, Department of Life Sciences. Their research suggests that sperm could provide a vital clue to how diseases like cancer and HIV spread through the body. The study identified glycoproteins on human sperm surface which prevent them being attacked by the female immune system. The markers are also found on cancer cells and HIV-infected blood cells and may help the diseases take hold.
The Guardian human evolution article 'Where do we go from here' refers to a study carried out on twins by Professor Ian Owens, Department of Life Sciences, which concluded that natural selection favours more teenage pregnancies, and that Catholic women have an increased reproductive fitness.
