Some words from Professor Donal Bradley, Head of the Physics Department:

"I am delighted to report that Professor Russell Cowburn of the
Experimental Solid State Physics Group has been awarded the first Degussa Science to Business Award

Russell's project on nanostructured magnetic logic elements for memory devices was one of three shortlisted from across Europe for the award and he was duly announced as the winner in Berlin on Monday evening. The award seeks to stimulate and encourage the transfer of excellent science into business opportunities and candidates had to write a proposal that explained the science they are doing and how it could be transitioned into a business. Candidates had to be 35 or younger in order to be eligible. The award was sponsored by Degussa (the largest speciality chemicals company in the world), INSEAD (the leading French Business School) and Handelsblatt (the German equivalent of the Financial Times). Russell received a striking trophy, a prize of 100,000 euro, and the offer of business training and consultancy from INSEAD to help develop a business plan."
