Toshiba Fellowship Programme seeks leading lights in science

~ 25th anniversary of the Toshiba Fellowship Programme ~

Toshiba Corporation, a global leader in technology innovation, has launched its search for cutting-edge PhD-level researchers, to join its Toshiba Fellowship Programme, which is now in its 25th year.

The Toshiba Fellowship Programme offers up to two outstanding scientists of EU nationality, who are currently working in a UK academic institution, the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of research and development activities with one of Toshiba’s R&D teams in Japan, — knowledge and skills which can be invested back into UK science development on their return. The successful candidate(s) will be funded for up to two years with a highly competitive salary.

Toshiba’s Fellowship Programme, which is run in association with the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council), was founded in 1983 with the aim of strengthening UK-Japanese understanding through R&D activities in an industrial context and was the first scheme of its kind to be run by a private company. Several Toshiba Fellows have gone on to become professors and leaders of research groups.

Commenting on the scheme Nobuhiro Yoshida, Corporate Vice President of Toshiba Corporation, said, “Over the last quarter of a century the Toshiba Fellowship Programme has actively promoted innovation, providing European academics the opportunity to collaborate with Toshiba researchers and to experience R&D in the environment of an industrial laboratory in Japan. It has also stimulated and challenged researchers in Japan through the introduction of fresh viewpoints and approaches to R&D. I believe that through their immersion in a new culture and having lived in one of Japan’s major research centres, Toshiba Fellows are invaluable as ambassadors between different societies.”

Toshiba has a long history of world-firsts, including the first laptop PC, the HDD and DVD video recorder, the smallest hard disk drive and the first commercially available HD DVD player. These are the visible results of Toshiba’s continuing commitment to R&D with an investment of $3.37 billion globally in the financial year ending on 31st March, 2007, alone.

Toshiba has outlined nine priority research areas for the 2008 Toshiba Fellowship Programme. These cover a wide spectrum of technologies including information security, the use of technology for behavioural therapy, software development, nanotechnology and sustainability. In addition, new advanced research topics relevant to Toshiba’s Fellowship Programme are also welcome.
