Staff and students at Imperial College are being encouraged this week to run or swim a mile to raise money for the Sport Relief campaign, which helps vulnerable people in the UK and in the world’s poorest countries.
The Sport Relief Mile Challenge is part of the College’s Healthy Living week, which runs from Monday 10 March to Friday 14 March and is jointly organised by Sport Imperial, Imperial College Union and Catering Services.
Leading a healthy lifestyle is the focus of the week’s events which aim to encourage staff and students to eat well and try new sporting activities.
Activities on offer this week include netball, aerobics, climbing, badminton, tai chi and circuits
Throughout the week there will be a range of free taster sporting activity sessions, healthy choice foods on offer and body MOTs involving basic health tests such as weight, BMI, body fat percentage and blood pressure, as well as advice and tips from trained Sport Imperial staff on keeping fit.
Free activities on offer include netball, aerobics, climbing, badminton, tai chi, circuits and massage sessions. Free class tickets will be given out every day around the South Kensington Campus. Staff and students can also win a class at Ethos, Imperial’s sport centre, by collecting five Healthy Choice stickers from catering outlets through buying certain healthy foods and drinks displaying the stickers in the College’s catering outlets.
The week culminates in the Sport Relief campaign on Friday 14 March. Staff and students will be encouraged to donate £1 at Ethos to enter the Sport Relief raffle and take part in a one mile treadmill or one mile swim challenge. Prizes will be awarded for the fastest times.
In addition, students and staff can sign up for the sponsored team climb with the aim of climbing the wall 200 times to raise further funds for Sport Relief.
Kelly McKenzie, Fitness Manager at Sport Imperial, said: “The overall aim of Healthy Living week is to try and highlight the importance of living a healthy lifestyle whether that be through diet or exercise. Changing just a small part of your day to day life can have a positive effect on your health and well being. We hope that the week encourages people to think about this.”
