Broker page links

CMS/Tips - You must put links to sub-pages in the content region of parent ('broker') pages

Broker page links to sub-pages

A broker page is any page which has sub-pages, sometimes called a 'parent' page. Even if you have included a left navigation tree on your broker page, you MUST still have explicit links to the sub-pages within the page content. This is for two main reasons:

  1. The dropdown menus and left navigation tree are generated by JavaScript. Some browsers do not handle JavaScript, or the users may have disabled JavaScript, so they would not see the dropdowns or left navigation tree at all. You must provide an alternative way to navigate to the sub-pages.
  2. When some search engines, e.g. Google, are indexing web pages, they will follow explicit links on pages, but not JavaScript-generated links. So your sub-pages would not be indexed and people searching with Google, for example, would not be presented with your sub-pages in their search results.

You can insert links to sub pages in three ways:

  1. Refer to all the sub-pages in the text on the page and make the references hyperlinks.
  2. Have a bullet list of the sub-pages on the page, with the references as hyperlinks.
  3. Insert a new content type "In This Section" beneath the "Content" items on a page. This will build a list of sub-pages dynamically when the page is loaded, but does not use JavaScript.

To insert an "In This Section" item on a page:

  1. Go to the required page and Login if not already.
  2. Click the Edit link.
  3. Click the Add Item icon i.e.

  4. Select the In This Section content type from the dropdown

  5. Click OK and then Finish
  6. The In This Section item will appear on the page e.g.

Note that the item is recreated dynamically every time the page is loaded so will reflect changes. It will also take into account the navigation settings for ordering pages.
