Crown is a world leader in the design, development and manufacture of packaging, supplying many of the best known brands in the areas of beverages, health and beauty care, industrial products and foods.

Worldwide, the company has a turnover of around $6.9 billion, with 24,000 employees and 155 plants
based in 42 countries. We make one out of every five beverage cans used in the world, and one in every three food cans used in North America and Europe, from food cans to biscuit tins, Crown products are all around you.

An engineering sponsorship at Crown is an opportunity for you to gain valuable experience with us during your university course, i.e. whilst on an industrial year before or during your University course. All of our sponsored students complete a minimum of 12 months training with us before graduation. Training is individually tailored to each student

Why does Crown sponsor?
Crown looks to attract quality students who have good potential to become business leaders of the future. By recruiting students early on in their career, we are able to train and help you to develop your skills that will ultimately help us to keep producing cutting edge technology.

What are the entry requirements?
Applicants should be studying ‘A’ Levels in Maths, Physics, Chemistry or related subjects and be applying to university to study Engineering, specialising in: Mechanical, Manufacturing, Production, Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, or similar.

What financial assistance is available?
Crown will provide students with a tax-free bursary whilst they are at university and will provide a generous salary and expenses package during training placements. Our awards vary slightly according to the type of University course that you do. For ‘thick sandwich’ courses Crown will pay a bursary of £1,625 per year, plus a salary ranging from £7,000 to £9,000 per year for work placements. For a ‘thin sandwich’ course Crown will pay a bursary of £1,200 per year, plus a salary at a minimum of £7,000 per year for work placements. Crown will also provide accommodation during all ‘in-company’ periods.

How many places are available?
Our aim at Crown is to recruit 3 Engineering Sponsored Students in 2008.

When would I work for Crown?
Students’s training is tailored to suit their University course – i.e.
• A ‘thick sandwich’ course – Students will participate in a year placement with us before starting a full-time four year degree course
• A ‘thin sandwich’ course - Students, where industrial attachments intersperse your academic studies on an integrated basis.

What would my training involve?
Students are introduce to the Crown company during a three day induction course at the start of their placement, where they will be able to meet other students and the people they will potentially be working with.

The 12-month placement will involve a series of three-month placements at various sites in the UK along with an academic term at a College of Technology for training in the main aspects of engineering techniques.

Can I work overseas during university vacations?
If students wish to spend some of their bursary on travelling to a different part of the world, Crown will do their best to offer paid work and accommodation during the sponsorship.

Can I continue to work for Crown after graduation?
Crown’s intention is to offer a graduate position to students once they graduate from university, to ensure continued creativity and innovation within the company – this is however, not a guaranteed.

If I continue to work for Crown, what are my Learning and Development opportunities?
Crown is committed to providing continued learning and development to all its employees. A number of onsite training courses and workshops in management techniques are available to graduates including: Assertiveness, Influencing Skills, Negotiation, Problem Solving, Time Management and Appraisal Skills. Crown also has extensive e-Learning resources that are available to all employees.

Sam Rickards, Mechanical Engineering, Imperial College London, 2006 (current sponsored student profile):
“The sponsorship scheme with Crown appealed to me as it provided the opportunity to undertake
industrial training between my second and third year of university and continual summer work experience. My aspirations for the future are to work in the creative world of research and development, and the early product manufacturing stages. I trust that my experience with Crown will guide me towards this."
