A.R.C. (Dick) Morphy
(Mechanical Engineering 1949-1952)
After leaving college Dick became a graduate trainee at CAV Ltd. Shortly afterwards he was asked by his uncle (Don Morphy) to join Morphy Richards at Orpington as a development engineer. Married in 1956 and had three children.He left Morphy Richards when it was taken over and in 1968 he joined GKN as a Technical Director.
In 1970 he was asked to join the family shipping agency in Greece, by his father Harold Morphy, becoming the fourth generation to head W.Morphy and son (est 1864), principles P&O and Cunard. W.Morphy and son was sold to Inchcape in 1988 and Dick was kept on as advisor, part time, until full retirement in 1997.
After his retirement he lived happily in his house in the Peloponnese of Greece with wife Poppy, indulging himself in his passion for Mediterranean gardening, until his sudden death from a stroke on May 30th 2008 at the age of 78 yrs.
Throughout his life he was immensely proud of the engineering training he received at City and Guilds.
He was an exceptional man and loved by all who knew him.
