INSIDE & OUT: Investment Banking - Monday 10 November 2008

What is it really like to be ‘out’ in investment banking?

City event aims to dispel myths and promote industry awareness.

Inside & Out is a special event being held in London on the 10th November 2008 that will give first and second year, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students the chance to find out more about careers in investment banking.

Hosted at a prestigious (but as yet undisclosed) Central London location, the event is being sponsored and run by the Interbank LGBT Forum, an industry-wide group* whose aim is to promote career opportunities in investment banking. Despite the recent financial upheaval, banks are still hiring and remain committed to finding the very best people. Places are limited, and full details of the application process can be found at www.insideandout-banking.com.

Natasha Glaves, one of the event organisers, says: “This is designed to be a lively and informative evening, but there’s also a very serious purpose behind it. It’s all about changing perceptions of investment banking as a career choice and persuading people that talent is the only thing you’ll be judged on.

“It’s well known that the potential rewards in the industry are second to none – but there’s still work to do when it comes to persuading people that the industry’s attitudes and culture have well and truly moved into the 21st century. In actual fact, banks are much more diverse environments than many people imagine – not just in terms of nationality and cultural background, but also sexual orientation and gender identity.

“What’s great about this event is that we’ll have plenty of people who can talk from direct personal experience about the issues faced by LGBT people in the City. And of course, with so many successful people in the room, it’s a great way for students and graduates to network and build up those vital contacts as well.”
