Dr Clifton Arnold (Clif) Shook was a native of Alberta, Canada and undertook research into solid/liquid transport at Imperial on an Athlone Fellowship.
After graduation he married Kate Turner and returned to Canada joining the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Saskatchewan where he had a distinguished career both in teaching and research. Solid/liquid transport was his life-long research interest and he spent two sabbaticals at the Warren Springs Laboratory at Stevenage furthering his knowledge in this field. With M.C. Roco he authored a definitive text on this subject entitled Slurry Flow: Principles and Practice (Butterworth Heineman 1991).
Clif retired from his Professorship at the University of Saskatchewan in 1996 but continued as a consultant to the Canadian oil sands industry until shortly before his untimely passing on 3 September 2006.
Amongst his many awards was the prestigious century of Achievement Award given to twenty Canadian chemical engineers by the Canadian Society of Chemical Engineers in recognition of their outstanding contributions to Chemical Engineering during the 20th Century.
Clif is survived by four sons, their wives and nine grandchildren.
