Obituary for Professor Umberto Ratti.

Umberto Ratti was a Full Professor and Chair of Advanced Electrical Engineering at the University of Rome “La Sapienzaâ€, Italy. After graduating with full marks cum laude and following his MSc, he undertook a number of post-doctoral positions at the University of Rome and did postgraduate research at University of Boulder, Colorado and University of Missouri, Columbia, USA.

He was Member of Electrical Engineering Institutions in Italy, USA, UK, member of the "Societe Europeenne de Culture", CEI Committees for Electrical Standards, and author of more than eighty publications on major scientific international and national papers.

Besides working on various international development projects and holding major consultancy positions for public and private institutions, he was also First Scientific Counsellor for the Italian Embassy both in Washington DC (1977-81) and Tokyo (1989-91).

His main interests were academic subjects, scientific research and technological innovation, always promoting international cooperation, since the beginning of his brilliant career. He always remembered, with great nostalgia, the years spent in London at Imperial College.
