Imperial Racing Green gear up for Silverstone Challenge
Student-led hydrogen cell racing team Imperial Racing Green are to take part in the new low emissions class of Formula Student
Imperial Racing Green, the student-led College project to design, build and race a zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, are preparing to take part in the inaugural Formula Student Class 1a event at Formula Student 2009. The race meeting, taking place at Silverstone racing circuit, will be held on Thursday 16 to Sunday 19 July 2009. The event, which will be the first of its kind in the UK, will see Imperial Racing Green compete against other universities to build and race the fastest, most efficient low emissions vehicle on the track.
It is expected that the team's vehicle will become the World's first ever hydrogen fuel cell racing car to compete head-to-head with combustion engines when it races against representatives from four other universities, each employing a low-emission vehicle of their own design. The team's participation in this event has been made possible by charitable donors and sponsors, including platinum sponsors Kokam America, NedStack, Johnson Matthey and ABSL Space Products.
"Competing in the Silverstone Formula Student meeting is hugely important to the future of Imperial Racing Green," commented Phil Richardson (4th year Mech Eng) Student Fundraising Director for the team. "The Class 1a event will let us not only gain additional experience of the demands of a full race day, but also help to really raise awareness of what we're doing."
