Registration of Trials on Public Access Database

You must now register clinical trials on a public access database before the enrolment of the first patient.

It is now necessary to publish details of clinical trials on a publicly accessible database as required the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).

The ICMJE's definition of a clinical trial is:

"Any research project that prospectively assigns human subjects to intervention and comparison groups to study the cause-and-effect relationship between a medical intervention and a health outcome."

Member journals will only consider a trial for publication if it has been registered before the enrolment of the first patient.

The Clinical Research Office and our associated Trusts have issued joint guidance on where you can register, please see our project planning pages for more information.
