Tom Brogan’s first degree in chemistry followed by a brief spell in the ceramics industry, formed an important scientific backdrop to a career in clinical microbiology. Starting with a PhD on the chemistry of sputum under the tutelage of Sir Alexander Fleming with typical determination concurrently, he attended night school to study biology in order to enter St Mary’s Hospital Medical School. Clinical medicine always remained his passion, so that he delighted in using his expertise as a microbiologist on ward rounds and in direct clinical care. He became a talented and amusing teacher as a senior lecturer in Cardiff and later in Manchester, teaching, mentoring and inspiring overseas Doctors studying for the Diploma in Bacteriology.

The last 15 years of his career were spent in Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport where his considerable leadership and organisational skills were highly valued, creating a first class postgraduate centre. After retirement he continued to dedicate much time to ecumenism in the Catholic Church. Increasing disability curtailed his enjoyment of the hills but his stoicism and quick wit never left him. He leaves his wife, one son and a grandson.
