Maths Review

Information regarding this week's maths review session.

Dear All:

I have uploaded a PDF file that shows chapter 1 of "Linear Algebra and its Applications" by Gilbert Strang (4th ed).  The scan satisfies the CLA copyright agreement.  Hardcopies of the book, in various editions, are in the library.

This Strang chapter refers to our exploratory work in our first Maths Review Session in Week 2.  This week, there was no MR session but I advise you to review last week's material by doing the following exercises from Chapter 1 of Strang:

Problem Set 1.2 on columns/rows:  Q1, Q2, Q6, Q11.

Problem Set 1.3 on elimination: All questions are relevant.

Problem Set 1.4 on matrices: Q1, Q2, Q4 for wam-up.  Interesting extras are Q9, Q10, Q11, Q13, and especially Q15.  We will pick this up in our next Maths Review session in Week 4 (Monday 2 Nov).

As further preparation for Week 4:  Problem Set 1.4, Q22 all through to Q32, Q37, Q39, Q40, Q44. 

We will look at these last exercises on Monday 2nd November. Please remember this review is optional and will be useful for those who have gone through the above questions. If you have a strong maths background and think you have a good grasp on the material already, then there is no need to attend.
