Annual Dinner/AGM - Imperial College Alumni Association of Northern California (ICAANC)

An event report from the Imperial College Alumni Associaition of Northern California AGM and Annual Dinner 2005.

We had our Annual Dinner/AGM on Saturday, December 3 2005. The evening kicked off with a hilarious name-the-celebrity-stuck-on-your-back icebreaker. We all had to go around asking fellow guests for clues on who we were. After a few swigs of Newcastle Brown, some of us managed to surmise who we were (Margaret Thatcher, in my case).

A report on this year's events and finances was followed by the election of next year's Organising Committee (see list below). A charming tradition of the Association was re-instated this year: a toast from the most recent graduate present (Michael Ang) to the earliest graduate present (John Robbins).We then sat down to a sumptuous Indian feast with all the trimmings.

After a raffle drawing, we listened to our Dinner Speaker, Peter Robinson, President of the San Francisco Literary Society. He regaled us with the sometimes hilarious outcomes that result from British humor in an American setting. We were also treated to some solid insights into British Literature from the ribald (Chaucer) to the serious (Shakespeare). During the talk, Peter circulated a photograph of himself and a few other notable Bay Area Brits taken with HRHs the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall during their recent visit here. He invited us to offer answers to the question:What were Charles and Camilla thinking when the photograph was taken? This elicited a variety of interesting responses from the audience, with the three most creative ones earning complimentary invitations to the San Francisco Literary Society's first 2006 event.

All told, it was a great evening of fellowship. Well deserved thanks go to all concerned for their help in not only making the Annual Dinner a success, but also making 2005 a great year for the Association. My best wishes to the 2006 Committee!
