Imperial College Alumni Association Malaysia – The Grand Gala Dinner Report
By ICAAM President, Dr Foo Ban Nyen, and Honorary Secretary, Dr Zainal Abidin Mior Ahmad.
Over 400 local and foreign alumni and their guests attended the Grand Gala Dinner, organised by ICAAM (Imperial College Alumni Association Malaysia) on 4 July 2003. The event was held at the 6 star Palace of the Golden Horses in the Mines Resort City just outside Kuala Lumpur. The Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato Seri Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad and his wife were guests of honour.
The ICAAM recorded the highest corporate sponsorships received from the event. Part of the sponsorship funds and net proceeds from the dinner ticket sales will support Imperial charities and student bursaries.
Dr Foo Ban Nyen's welcome speech was followed by a brief address by the British High Commissioner, Mr Bruce Cleghorn. A video presentation included addresses by the Rector, Sir Richard Sykes and Pro Rector Professor Tidu Maini.
After dinner, the Prime Minister delivered his Inaugural Speech of the ICAAM Lecture Series. He spoke about the newly proposed Biovalley Project, the success of the Multimedia Super Corridor, which he promoted at the College in 1997 and acknowledged the contribution made to these projects by members of ICAAM and other Imperial alumni.
The event was well publicised in local daily newspapers in the two days that followed. A private local television channel, TV3, which covered the event, gave a good review of the Gala Dinner.
