Two Havering Mayesbrook athletes, Faye Fullerton from Upminster and Harriet Scott from Brentwood, have been selected by double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes to join her successful ‘On Camp with Kelly' mentoring and education initiative which has been sponsored by Aviva since it began in 2004.
Both athletes have been selected as a result of their excellent performances over 1500m in recent seasons. Faye set her personal best of 4:10.45 in 2008 when she also finished fourth at the Aviva UK Championships and she won the England Under 23 1500m title in 2006. Harriet set her personal best of 4:15.12 last year when finishing seventh in the 1500m at the Aviva UK Championships after missing the 2008 season through injury. In 2007 she won the bronze medal at the British Universities Championships and finished fourth at the Aviva England Under 23 Championships.
Dame Kelly said: "Not all athletes develop at the same rate and I wanted to recognise the achievements of some slightly older athletes such as Faye and Harriet by inviting them to join ‘On Camp with Kelly'. I am sure that the mentoring and education support they will be able to access through ‘On Camp with Kelly' together with hard work they put in with their coaches will help them to achieve even more in the future. I look forward to working with Faye and Harriet."
Faye and Harriet are two of five new athletes who have been selected to join ‘On Camp with Kelly' and they all attended a recent Get-Together at Birmingham University. As well as taking part in training sessions with 30 other OCWK athletes, they were given a full introduction to the initiative by Dame Kelly. They also benefited from a workshop about the Female Athlete Triad, a condition which can have serious implications for young female endurance athletes.
Faye said: "The opportunity to be part of an initiative run by one of Britain's most successful athletes ever provides me with enormous inspiration and I am honoured to be selected for ‘On Camp with Kelly' by Kelly and Aviva. I thoroughly enjoyed the Get-Together and it is apparent that Kelly puts her heart and soul into ‘On Camp with Kelly'."
Harriet added: "The expertise and experience that Kelly will be able to provide will be second to none and having seen how other athletes have benefited from ‘On Camp with Kelly' in the past makes me excited to be part of it. I would like to thank Kelly and Aviva for this fantastic opportunity."
Heather Smith, Head of Sponsorship & CR at Aviva, said: "We are proud to have supported ‘On Camp with Kelly' from the beginning and we are very pleased to be welcoming five new athletes to the initiative. It is our hope that Aviva's support and Dame Kelly's mentoring and advice will assist these athletes to develop into world class performers."
