Laura Bethke, Kate Clements and Sophia Huang took the top prizes at the Physics Graduation Prize Award in October making it a clean sweep for women in Science. Laura was awarded both the Governor's Prize for the best MSci student in Physics as well as the prestigious Abdus Salam Undergraduate Prize which is also awarded to the best MSci student in Physics at the final exams. Kate Clements won the Callendar Prize which is awarded annually to a final year student in the Physics Department for all-round excellence. Sophia Huang from Singapore, won the Governors' prize in Physics for the best BSc student in Physics at the final exams.
Laura is continuing her academic studies as a Phd student in Theoretical Physics and Kate a MRes in Controlled Quantum Dynamics. Well done all and what an inspiration to other like minded young women !
The Abdus Salam Prize was presented by Mansoor Ahmad, National Secretary for Student Affaires of Majlis Khuddam ul admadiyya, UK.
The Governors' Prize and the Callendar Prize were presented by our Physics HoD, Professor Jo Haigh.
Laura Bethke endorses her time at Imperial -
“I really enjoyed my time as an undergraduate in physics, in particular because of the diverse structure of the course. Imperial offers a good ratio of experimental and mathematical options and no matter what your future career path might be, it helps to know both. I am now a PhD student in the theory group at Imperial and will hopefully be able to pursue a career in academia."
Kate Clements had this to add -
“What I enjoyed most throughout my undergraduate degree in Physics was the flexibility of the programme and the wide range of options open to students. I did the degree with a Year in Europe and the department could not have been more accommodating in tailoring that programme to meet my needs. Despite its excellence as a research institution, the level of support that students at the Blackett Laboratory receive is second-to-none. I am now a student on Imperial’s Centre for Doctoral Training in Controlled Quantum Dynamics, and hope very much to stay in Physics in years to come.”
