Provided by Winifred Brummage
Kenneth Brummage obtained his BSc, ARCS and DIC in 1942, and his PhD in 1943. He was appointed to the physics section of BP in 1944 and later headed the department concerned with electronic microscopy, and later air and sea pollution. This involved pioneering work on tanker safety following several major disasters including the Torrey Canyon in 1967.
Ken chaired an international committee of oil industry experts to develop safe methods of washing ships tanks by venting them with exhaust gas, and published very effective guidelines which are still in use today.
He retired from BP in 1976. He moved to Brockenhurst in 1978, where he was involved in several local activities.
Ken died suddenly on 28 December 2006.
