Dr Rashid Ganeev 's account of his recent award -

The Khwarizimi International Award was established in 1987 by the Iranian Research Organisation for Science and Technology which is affiliated to the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology of Iran. IROST proposed the creation of the Khwarizmi Award in memory of Abu Jafar The KIA presentationMohammad Ibn Mousa Khwarizmi, the great Iranian Mathematician and Astronomer ( 770 - 840 ). This award is supported by UNESCO, WIPO, IFIA, COMSTECH, COMSATS, TWAS, ISESCO, WAITRO and other international organisations which allocate special prizes to the KIA Laureates. Year by year the area of participation in the KIA is expanding, attracting more scientists from all over the world. Today, the Khwarizmi International Award continues to pursue its successful course with more participation and more international recognition.

This year 178 applications from 46 countries were received for the competition for the KIA. International organisations grant prizes to the KIA Laureates. The selection is made by the KIA Jury according to the criteria fixed by the International Organisations. The candidature is submitted for approval to the international organisation before the final decision. Four winners were defined from four categories of awards, Basic Science, Medicine, Biology and Microtechnology.

The official ceremony for the KIA Laureates was held on the 5th February in Tehran. This time the winners were scientists from Australia, Germany, Italy and Uzbekistan. I was among those four winners. Originally I am a citizen of Ubekistan. Recently, I have won the Marie Curie fellowship and am now staying for two years at Imperial College, London at the Blackett Laboratory, in Quantum Optics and Laser Sciences. The area of my expertise is the high - order nonlinear optical properties of laser plasmas in extreme ultraviolet range.more presentations

This year the 24th Khwarizmi International Award was personally presented to the KIA Laureates by the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The award for Basic Sciences was in recognition of my "outstanding scientific findings in the area of frequency conversion of laser radiation in the ultrashort wavelength range using high-order harmonic generation in laser - produced plasmas." I also received the letter of appreciation from the President of Iran, as well as the award from the Economic Co - operation Organisation.

The short stay during the award ceremony was well organised. We visited a few scientific centres and had discussions with Iranian scientists on topics of joint interest as well as visited some important places in Tehran.
