Dr Maha Taysir Barakat, co-founder of the Imperial College Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) in Abu Dhabi, has been awarded an OBE for services to medical research, training and public health in the United Arab Emirates.
Dr Barakat is a Reader in Metabolic Medicine in the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism.  She has been on secondment to Abu Dhabi for the last six years to set up and run the ICLDC. The centre is founded on four pillars: Treatment, Research, Training and Public Health.  Further information is available at www.icldc.ae and www.diabetesae.ae.
ICLDC has been operational for four years in a country with the second highest prevalence of diabetes worldwide, with 36,000 registered patients.  The centre offers in excess of 100 Class I CME (continuing medical education) hours and has individually counselled over 80,000 people in the community.
Dr Barakat: "The award took me by surprise, is a real privilege for me, and is extremely humbling.  It is a recognition of the efforts and expertise of Imperial College London, the support of ICLDC's shareholders Mubadala (a division of the Abu Dhabi government), and the successful partnership between them."
