P1 Marine Foundation undergraduate awards

A national awards scheme for outstanding projects specifically designed to have a positive and sustainable impact on the marine environment.

P1 Marine Foundation has launched a national Awards scheme to recognise and reward undergraduate projects across the UK that present outstanding project proposals specifically designed to have a positive and sustainable impact on the marine environment.

Eligibility
Undergraduate students from universities all across the UK are eligible to apply. We welcome individuals or groups who are currently studying for undergraduate degrees.

Nominee Solicitation
Heads of Department will nominate or recommend a project proposal for the selected category. Nominee projects will be sent to P1 Marine Foundation via email or post.

Categories
Here is a list of the categories and sub categories for the Awards:

World Ocean Council Award for the Environment

  • Education on re disposal and reduction of garbage – from both ship and shore perspectives
  • Impacts of pollution in Arctic waters – potential Northern and NW routes
  • Antifouling toxins

Technology

  • Improved energy efficiency for offshore marine vessels
  • Greenhouse gas emission reduction for marine vessels
  • Noise reduction in the marine environment

Innovation

  • Carbon efficiency
  • Alternative method of green energy
  • Reduction of marine pollution

Prize
Each prize will consist of a certificate and funding. The award will be split between 3 categories and each winner will receive with a certificate and funding to assist with further studies.

Judging Panel
Entries will be judged by a panel of scientists, entrepreneurs, environmental leaders and specialists from marine related industries. These include: Paul Holthus, Executive Director of World Ocean Council, Dr Trevor Dixon, Marine Pollution Specialist at Advisory Committee on Protection of the Sea and Kirsty Schneeberger, Coordinator for Department of Energy and Climate Change's Youth Advisory Panel.

Award Ceremony
Nominees will be invited to attend a special ceremony as part of the Powerboat P1 SuperStock Awards Ceremony in Liverpool on 11th September 2011.

Application Submission
Heads of department are requested to nominate one undergraduate research student or group whose project was considered to be outstanding. A letter or recommendation along with the project and a detailed report of no more than one A4 page should be sent to:

The following information should also be submitted:

  1. The candidate’s date of birth
  2. The candidate’s university and the degree course they are studying
  3. The length of time the project took
  4. The nature and extent of assistance given to the undergraduate

Entries must be received by 31st July 2011.

Confidentiality
All information disclosed to the judges in the judging process is treated in the strictest confidence. Projects will be returned to the departments after the Award has been announced via email or post.

  • Launch of Awards & Call for Entries -11th April
  • Deadline for submission - 31st July
  • Shortlist announced - 29th August
  • Awards Ceremony - 11th September
