Robin Smith has been awarded the Imperial Medal for 2011

Robin Smith has been awarded the Imperial Medal for 2011.

Robin joined the Physics Department in 1964 as a postgraduate student and in 1968 he joined the staff as a  lecturer based in the Applied Optics Group. Between then and his (not quite) retirement in 2005 he carried out  virtually every significant administrative role in the department including Head of Applied Optics, Director of  Undergraduate Studies, Associate Head of Department and Acting Head of Department when Peter Knight took  the post of Faculty Principal. At the same time he managed to continue to nurture his research activities and  maintain a strong teaching presence. Everything he undertook was done with enthusiasm and humour and the  department has been lucky to have benefitted from his dedication.
