A view of a large crowd of people in Albert Square, Manchester; around the Albert memorial statue. Most of the crowd are looking to the left of the photo. On the far right is a banner which says ‘Armley Resource Centre Leeds’, only the letters ‘Armle Resour Centr Leed’ are visible. There is a mix of people standing and sitting on the ground or in wheelchairs. some are holding banners and placards.

Commemorating Disability History Month 2025

Disability History Month was founded in 2010 to facilitate and support the teaching of the history of disabled persons across the UK. The aim of this movement was to raise awareness of the ableism present in our society but also to develop an understanding of the roots of this inequality and to commemorate the actions of disabled people in the past who have fought for change.

If you're interested in learning more, we would recommend exploring the Disabled People's Archive and National Disability Arts Collection & Archive. Additionally, the Victoria & Albert Museum is currently home to a Design and Disability exhibit, tracing the contributions of disabled, deaf and neurodivergent people to design history and culture from the 1940s to the present day.

Curious about eco-ableism? The Disability Advisory Service will be running a stall from 12.00 - 14.00 on Monday 24 November to raise awareness of how disabled people are often excluded from environmental activism and policies. You'll find them on the Sherfield Walkway.
