Formula Student 2026 Updates
by Nadia Barbu
Imperial Formula Racing, the Formula Student Team of Imperial College, achieved great success at the most recent Formula Student UK competition at Silverstone in July 2025.
We accomplished our ambitious goal to complete the endurance event for the first time in 13 years, while putting in a strong performance in all events, leading to a sixth place finish overall.
Progress Update
Since last year’s competition, our team has continued to strengthen. We started the year with our most successful recruitment cycle in October, bringing together 200 students to work on technical and operational projects during the year. For the first time in the team’s history, we are developing two vehicles simultaneously; we are optimising the IFR-01 car from last year to IFR-01b, aiming to bring its performance to greater heights in this year’s competition while beginning the design of a brand-new spaceframe for IFR-02 – our competition entry for 2027.
Projects for IFR-01b have progressed well, with designs for new systems completed before Christmas, and entering the final stages of manufacturing. We completed a shakedown of the IFR-01b last month in South Kensington, along with successful track tests at Bicester Motion and Ford in recent weeks. The whole team is excited for the upcoming rigorous track test schedule starting this month, where we will be pushing the performance of the car to its limit and preparing to compete at Silverstone once again!
Our Sponsors
At Imperial Formula Racing, we are extremely grateful and appreciative of the support we receive internally from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the university, and externally from our sponsors. One major sponsor our project would not be possible without is Accu. Their support from previous years has continued in the current season, and their wide catalogue of high-quality fasteners paired with reliable, fast delivery has enabled our team to bring designs to life.
Our systems on both the IFR-01b and IFR-02 will be primarily held together with Accu’s products during competition this year and in 2027. We continue to benefit from Accu’s continued innovation, such as their addition of Quick Order, allowing our team to manage orders for multiple projects.
“Accu’s support has been crucial to the development of many projects within my team. We have used a wide range of fasteners from Accu, from bolts and nuts to washers and inserts. When I make a purchase from Accu, I have confidence that my order will arrive on-time and be of the excellent quality Accu is known for", said Marcus Ieong, Head of Chassis.
