EPICS-UK Researchers share research at IEEE PES General Meeting 2026, Montréal, Canada

Imperial Researchers' participation at the IEEE PES General Meeting 2026

Three Researchers from the Electric Power Innovation for a Carbon-free Society (EPICS-UK) Centre attended the 2026 IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) General Meeting in Montréal, Canada, presenting research and engaging with the international power systems community.

Ambuj Gupta, Debraj Bhattacharjee, and Gabriel Covarrubias Maureira represented EPICS-UK at the conference, held from 19–23 July 2026.

The IEEE PES General Meeting brings together researchers, engineers and industry professionals to discuss developments and emerging challenges in electric power and energy systems. This year's program included several sessions on power systems with increasing levels of inverter-based resources (IBRs), with system strength emerging as a key area of interest. The meeting also featured dedicated sessions on sub-synchronous oscillations, a topic closely connected to ongoing research within EPICS-UK on understanding, detecting and locating oscillatory behaviour in future power systems.

Ambuj participated in the IEEE PES General Meeting Student Poster Competition, presenting work on a new approach for assessing system strength in power grids with high levels of inverter-based resources. This closely aligned with the wider discussions on system strength taking place throughout the conference.

Debraj presented the paper 'Data-Driven Post-Event Analysis with Real-World Oscillation Data from Denmark'. The work uses measurements from a real oscillation event in the Danish power grid to demonstrate how data-driven methods can help identify equipment contributing to problematic oscillations, potentially supporting more targeted action by system operators.

Gabriel presented 'Spatial Characterization of Sub-Synchronous Oscillations Using Black-Box IBR Models'. The research investigates how sub-synchronous oscillations can develop and spread across power systems containing inverter-based resources, including situations where detailed models of individual resources are unavailable. Ambuj also participated in the conference's student poster activity.

The conference provided opportunities beyond the technical sessions for EPICS-UK Researchers to engage with colleagues from across the power and energy community. Through networking events and in-person discussions, the team highlighted ongoing work within EPICS and exchanged ideas with researchers working on related challenges.

The discussions in Montréal helped raise awareness of EPICS-UK research within the wider power systems community and provided a foundation for further engagement at next year's IEEE PES General Meeting in San Francisco.
