Leading system operators unite to share perspectives and experiences of tackling SSO

The Energy Systems Integration Group (ESIG) and the Global Power System Transformation consortium (G-PST) brought together leading system operators for a focused roundtable on sub-synchronous oscillations (SSO) at the Global System Operations Summit in Berlin on 18 September 2026.

Hosted by Professors Balarko Chaudhuri and Mark O’Malley representing EPICS-UK, the deep-dive discussion involved operators from Europe and North America and South America including CEN (Chile), Energinet (Denmark), ERCOT (US), Hydro Quebec (Canada), MISO (US), NESO (GB), Statnett (Norway), Svenska kraftnät (Sweden) and TenneT (Germany and the Netherlands).

The system operators shared their perspectives and experiences of tackling SSO across system planning, operation and post-event analysis.

A clear message emerged: SSOs are a priority area of concern and further research and development is urgently needed to mitigate SSO risks and avoid conservative curtailment of clean energy.
