The Rector, Sir Richard Sykes, enjoyed an audience with the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr Mahathir-bin-Mohammad, at the end of October 2002, when he visited Kuala Lumpur. They discussed education, new areas in research and Imperial's strong links with Malaysia through its past and present Malaysian student body.
Whilst in Malaysia, Sir Richard also addressed the British Malaysia Chamber of Commerce at a lunchtime meeting in Kuala Lumpur, giving a lecture entitled 'The Future of Biomedical Research' drawing an audience of 150 from various universities and Malaysian government agencies.
Dr Tidu Maini, pro rector development and corporate affairs, also attended the two day tour, accompanying Sir Richard on visits to the University of Malaysia and Petronas University. To mark the visit, the Imperial College Alumni Association Malaysia organised a gala dinner at the Hotel Equatorial in Kuala Lumpur. Sir Richard and Dr Maini were welcomed by President, Dr Foo Ban Nyen, and enjoyed meeting a large contingent of alumni, before Sir Richard delivered an after-dinner address to dinner guests, entitled 'Realising our vision'.
