Learning Well Programme - Wellbeing and evidence-based learning for lifelong continuous growth

The inaugural Learning Well Programme took place from Monday 10 to Friday 14 February 2025, and comprised of 26 interactive sessions designed to support Imperial students to consider their study strategies and reflect on how these relate to their wellbeing. This university-wide event focused on proactive approaches to promote sustainable study strategies.

Sessions were designed to offer Imperial students first-hand opportunities to:

  • develop their understanding of the important link between study strategies and mental wellbeing - based on evidence from the research literature and our own empirical data, and by challenging assumptions, myths and misconceptions;
  • explore practices that support positive wellbeing alongside effective and efficient academic learning;
  • consider practical steps they can take to craft their own path to learning well here at Imperial.

Based on findings from our educational research and drawing on the expertise of Imperial staff, the Learning Well Programme brought together relevant learning from staff and key student support services across the University. Each day in the programme was organised around a specific theme. This initiative offered a variety of interactive and participatory sessions to engage students with evidence-based strategies that support both learning and personal growth, encourage them to reflect on their study practices, and recognise learning behaviours that could enhance their overall wellbeing.

We aimed to create a supportive environment where students could actively explore, discuss, and try wellbeing and study strategies that they could integrate into their academic day-to-day routines. This programme sought to empower students to incorporate wellness into their learning journey, ultimately contributing to a well-rounded experience of being an Imperial student as well as promoting a positive university culture around mental wellbeing.

Our updated approaches going forward - from a focused Learning Well Programme to an embedded provision model

The Learning Well Programme reached learners across the achievement spectrum, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels of study. Students who participated in sessions demonstrated strong engagement, shared meaningful personal reflections and reported tangible learning gains. However, the project team’s evaluation of the event identified some challenges. Principally, one key area was reaching all students, as attendance levels varied throughout the week.

Going forward, we will move away from a one-week delivery model to adopt an embedded approach whereby we integrate Learning Well sessions into the curriculum. By aligning them with existing academic events and at carefully planned points in the year, we aim to enhance reach, relevance, timeliness and accessibility. This strategic organisational shift will enable students to explore and incorporate effective strategies at the point of need, facilitate sustained engagement over time, and extend the overall impact of the Learning Well provision. The Learning Well team will continue to work with departments to ensure that students are equipped to thrive in their studies.
