Staff, students and visitors at Imperial undertake several types of research and academic activities as part of their engagement at Imperial. Considerations for Research Security and the relevant protective security measures will vary depending on various factors including:
- Whether and how international partners are involved
- The destinations where external parties are located, working or controlled from within
- The capabilities, purposes and material connections of involved parties
- The subject matter of interest (scientific disciplines, technological domains, project topics and purposes etc)
- The nature and context of the collaboration (formal or informal; in-person, hybrid or remote interactions etc.)
- Any other relevant considerations
This part of our Research Security guidance contextualises some of these activities by breaking them down into smaller categories of academic activity and through case studies.
Please note that the list of activities and scenarios are not exhaustive or exclusive. Staff and students are expected to consider potential risks of a particular engagement even if it does not fall neatly into one of the presented activity types or examples.
